Bigger, smarter, faster, stronger…

So what the heck did you expect, guys. Every techie, web-head, mac-guru, pc-addict, gamer, day-trader and cousins brothers niece out there has already formed an opinion on Apples new tablet. There are iTampon jokes running rampant across the interwebs and companies already announcing that they’ve been ” developing” for this product even though they never heard about it before last week.

The negative reaction would suggest that, well, people expected all those rumors to be gospel. That they weren’t just the product of a host of mac fans ferreting out every patent and domain name that might even have been loosely related to this product. Why, other than all the attendant, fan-related hype, did anyone think this was going to be anything more than an iPhone on steroids? Apple hasn’t leaked any “game changing” specs, there’s been no groundbreaking technology developed. But in the aftermath of the announcement everyone is suddenly switching gears and jumping on the Apple-bashing bandwagon.

“It shoulda, it shoulda, it shoulda…” there are comments all over about what it should and should not have. I can tell you as someone who has dipped a toe onto product development, and whose company is developing games for the “i” technology set, that once this stuff gets rolling, the design can’t change midstream. Why isn’t there Flash support? Because it would gut the app-store and Apples ability to quality-control, undermining their stand that the Apple line is idiot
proof. Why doesn’t it have a 3d holographic display like they have in Minority Report? Because the battery life would be zero. Why can’t we swap out the battery ourselves? Because it would open a secondary market for 3rd party hardware, and since Jobs took control back, Apple has done it’s best to make sure 3rd party hardware is minimal.  In fact, forget Bill Gates, if you’re looking for the ultimate control-freak corporation out there, take a close look at Apple.  The reason ther stuff is so sexxy, the reason so much works right out of the box (though if you believe all that hype, you’re probably just using your mac-book to download tv shows and blog) is because they control *everything* about the production, even 3rd party production has to meet requirements that devs would absolutely turn purple over if it were handed out by anyone else.  But because it’s Apple, we put up with it.

Keep you knickers on, people!
